How to Go Far in HR?

November 25th, 2008

HR, or Human Resources, to give it its full title, is a really interesting field to work in, since you see all different aspects of the employment field. You may have to deal with disciplinary procedures, with managing staff sickness, terminating employment contracts and recruiting new staff as well as staff welfare issues. How varied is that?

Because it is such a  varied job and the tasks associated with a position in HR are so diverse, you really need to be multi-skilled. You need to be diplomatic and yet able to enforce tight procedures and ensure that you are very much up to speed with the ever changing employment laws.

But once you have secured a position in HR it is often quite easy to progress, if you have the necessary skills and are willing to put the effort in of course. Then you can end up as a Director and since the role of HR is so valued within good companies, you may end up with a terrific salary and package.

Yet like all dream jobs, it can be hard to get a foot on the career ladder and it is a position that is not suited to everyone. Perhaps the best way of testing out whether HR is a field that you want to enter is to talk to a recruitment agency about finding a position, preferably a temping position, in HR, so that you can try it out for yourself and see if this is an area that you want to go in to, or whether or not you would find it too demanding. Remember it can be very hard being involved in terminating contracts or enforcing redundancies. So some people do not relish the tasks that Human Resources brings to their door, but on the other hand, looking at staff welfare and making the office environment safer and more pleasant to work in, can be enormously satisfying and it can be a worthwhile career.
