It is all too easy to take a job, think that all is going well and then find out that you are actually receiving far less in terms of money and benefits than employees of other companies who do the same kind of work that you do.
So how do you make sure that you are being paid the going rate for your job? Do you need to ask for a pay rise? Or are you actually being paid a fair rate for the work that you undertake?
Well the first thing that you can do to check your salary position is to explore what other companies pay. The best way of doing this is through looking at job adverts to see if rival companies pay more. But you should also compare like with like. If you are a secretary for a small company, you may find that pay scales for larger, corporate companies or more stressful positions are better paid, so always factor in a kind of comparison. Is it actually the same job, or are the expectations different?
You should also take benefits into account. Private healthcare or subsidised travel may be a factor. Even parking counts for a lot, particularly in city centre locations.
You can check with a recruitment agency to see how much temping positions are paid, but remember temping positions may attract higher pay scales because the job is temporary i.e. you don’t get the luxury of being permanent and also the agency will require a fee.
If you do find that other, comparable companies pay more than your employer, then feel free to approach your employer, but do so with hard facts and evidence, that s/he will not be able to refute. Then you will be able to have a sensible dialogue, rather than it being perceived as you just moaning. But Good Luck and remember to do all
